Well, I'm not going to sleep NOW.

After a hard day's spring cleaning followed by a cheery evening of reading fic late into the night, I was in bed and just about to doze off when I heard an odd sound from one of the cats.
Fearing that the sound heralded vomiting on My Nice Clean Floors, I got up to investigate.
I found:
1. A rather alarmingly large white tail startled out of its hiding place when I turned on the light
2. Ants in the pantry converging on a pot of honey I evidently close the lid on securely enough, oops.
3. Three (3) slugs in the kitchen of the "Holy F&$K THAT'S HUGE" variety.
I think Myfanwy had been trying to do something to a slug. Or maybe she just wanted to get outside. Or she DID vomit and I just didn't find it yet.
But! Weird giant long slimy slugs! Crawling over My Nice Clean Cupboards! And they were only the ones I could SEE.
I am comforted now that Myfanwy is curled purring on my chest; I feel secure that she will leap to my defense should, I don't know, more slugs emerge from wherever the fuck they're emerging from, or I discover a colony of wetas in the walls. It feels like it's that kind of night.
Must remain vigilant!!
(Wikipedia says these yellow slugs are actually really common. Are they coming up EVERY NIGHT and I just never see them??? *is horrified*)
(I feel the need to disclaim that I am not usually a squeamish person when it comes to things like bugs or slimy things or dead rats. After a perfectly understandable "ew omfg eww" I'm quite happy to deal with whatever needs dealing with. But slugs IN MY HOUSE give me the heeby jeebies, especially since I don't know how they're getting in or where they're going or what they're looking for. Probably brains! My brains!)

Date: 2009-10-03 08:42 pm (UTC)I'm gonna try washing that area with salt water tomorrow. I know they don't like salt, so that should (maybe, probably) help.

Date: 2009-10-04 09:10 pm (UTC)And they have these antennas that actually makes them kind of cute, but also--slime. Ew.
I don't understand why they are everywhere right now. Do they have, like, a season or something? And why are they only out at night? That makes me wanna go out and stake a couple of them to see if they'd turn to dust.

Date: 2009-10-04 10:32 pm (UTC)(I'm in New Zealand, and I should actually count myself lucky that the slugs were only about six or seven cm long - pretty much every species of creepy crawly here has some varitey that is the "New Zealand Giant _______").
(I can't believe I'm talking this much about slugs.)
