Is there anyone who wants to come to a free comedy gig tonight? Steve Wrigley, 7pm, the Classic.  I'm going with a couple of friends and we have a spare seat booked.

(In a TOTALLY UNRELATED MATTER, I have learned that it's probably more effective to nab Alan's iphone and enter events into it rather than just tell him a week before, because otherwise he might forget. Um.)

I went swimming last night for the first time in months, managing 40 laps (not my best, but a pretty good effort) and I feel better for it. Not in the least because I have been indulging in quite a lot of delicious food of greasy, cheesy, deepfried, sugary deliciousness over the last week or so, and I am feeling it.

The one lot of such food I DON'T regret, though, was fish and chips on Saturday. The weather in the morning was just so utterly SPLENDIFEROUS I decided I absolutely had to go swimming in the sea. And since I don't know of any nice swimming beaches any closer than an hour out of Auckland, I shanghaied Alan and we went up to Goad Island Marine Reserve. We didn't arrive til about 3.30pm, which was wonderful since the beach was emptying out and the sea had been warmed by the sun all day.

I think it was later in the season than I'm used to, so there weren't quite as many huge schools of fish, but there were still plenty of snapper (such fat, juicy-looking snapper!) and spotties and a school of piper. I had masses of fun snorkelling for the first time in a year or so and Alan dutifully followed me around the bay getting used to the snorkel and letting me point out random fish and things to him.

So, obviously, we needed to have fish and chips for dinner. The Laws of New Zealand Summer Recreation demanded it! (Ate on the bank of the river going through Warkworth, absolutely delightful.)

Eugh, I just listened to a voicemail message I was leaving, and my rising intonation is SO OBVIOUS. Gosh it sounds dreadful.

Other things I've been vaguely intending to post about:

- insta rec! New Mexican place just opened on Great North Rd in Grey Lynn, where there used to be a Nandos. Absolutely delicious authentic Mexican food, served with passion and enthusiasm. Went there last week with Laputain and enjoyed the entire meal.

- I am learning to play Magic. Right now I am veeery slow and honestly, Alan's playing half my game for me. But I'm learning to tell more about the cards than if the picture's pretty! (Although right now I'm playing with a white angel-themed deck so yes, the pictures do tend to be very pretty.)

- Destroyed in Seconds is now on NZ tv, albiet with a kiwi presenter and all the voice-over redubbed. (Although they haven't bothered to convert imperial to metric, which irks me.) But! This is one of my FAVOURITE TV SHOWS. I don't know why, but I LOVE IT SO MUCH. There are things! Getting destroyed! In SECONDS! Monday nights, 7.30pm, TV3. You should watch it.
